Summer Fun 2022

Summer Fun at MDS (Ages 3-6)

June 27 – July 29, 2022

Celebrate summer the Montessori Discovery way, where children are invited to follow their curiosity, cultivate wonder, and mix fun and learning in a joyful, nurturing environment.

Our 5-week Summer Fun program centers on a different theme each week, offering 3-6 year olds the opportunity to explore new activities while still being guided by their own interests.

Summer Fun is open to all primary-aged children, including those who do not attend MDS during the school year.

Our program is led by Montessori Discovery School staff members and is available by the week. You may choose one week, several weeks, or the entire five weeks — whatever works best for your schedule.

2022 Summer Fun Weekly Themes:

Week 1: KID ART! Create! Explore! Discover!
(June 27 – July 1)

Kids and art: a match made in heaven! During this week we’ll explore art and artists in many ways. We will see how listening to different pieces of music can affect our drawings, explore color mixing experiments and create our own masterpieces inspired by famous artists such as Kandinsky and Van Gogh!

Week 2: We Love Books!
(July 5 – July 8)

Come explore the world through reading! We will investigate different genres, asking questions like “What makes a fiction book different from a non-fiction book?” We will even explore the art of storytelling through story circles! At the end of the week, each child will be invited to bring in their favorite book from home. We hope you will join us in sharing special books with great friends!

Week 3: Kicking up our Heels with Llamas and Horses!
(July 11 – 15)

Calling all young equestrians! Come investigate and learn about llamas and horses. Where did they come from? How are they the same? How are they different? Our llamas will make an appearance and we’ll bake special horse treats for a surprise visitor! We’ll also get up close and personal with all the tack needed to ride a horse.

Week 4: Under the Sea!
(July 18 – 22)

Did you know that sea sponges are older than dinosaurs? How about that there are over 1,000 species of sharks? This week we will transform into marine biologists by learning about life under the sea! Join us as we explore and discover the creatures that are found in our deep oceans! We’ll even have a visit from real live sea critters courtesy of Mystic Aquarium.

Week 5: Fun in the Sun (or Rain)!
(July 25 – 29)

Does your child enjoy outside exploration? Then this week is for them! We’ll create obstacle courses and explore water play through sensory activities like sprinklers and water tables! We’ll enjoy picnic lunches outdoors and prepare some refreshing lemonade and popsicles to share.

Application form includes schedule and pricing.

The MDS Summer Fun program follows the Montessori approach:

  • Materials are displayed on child-sized shelves
  • Children are free to move about and choose their own activities
  • Younger children learn from watching older children; older children help the younger ones
  • Children are encouraged to develop independence while at the same time to become part of a caring community
  • Learning to work together and solve problems respectfully is an important part of our program
  • Children can also use puzzles, blocks and a whole range of everyday living activities such as sewing, pouring and spooning. Although we usually eat lunch inside, sometimes we’ll have a picnic lunch in the shade. We have two playgrounds for outdoor fun and water play.

Our Summer Fun program also offers children who will be joining our Montessori classrooms in the fall a chance to get to know us. This usually leads to an easier adjustment to our educational program.
