Summer Fun at MDS (Ages 3-6)
June 26 to August 18, 2023
Celebrate summer the Montessori Discovery way, where children are invited to follow their curiosity, cultivate wonder, and mix fun and learning in a joyful, nurturing environment.
Week 1 (6/26- 6/30) We Love Books!
Come explore the world through reading! We will investigate different genres, asking questions like What makes a fiction book different from a non-fiction book? We will even explore the art of storytelling through story circles! At the end of the week, each child will be invited to bring in their favorite book from home. We hope you will join us in sharing special books with great friends!
Week 2 (7/3- 7/7) Fun in the Sun! (or rain!)
Does your child enjoy outdoor exploration? Then this week is for them! We’ll create obstacle courses and explore water play through sensory activities like sprinklers and water tables! We’ll enjoy picnic lunches outdoors and prepare some refreshing lemonade and popsicles to share.
Week 3 (7/10- 7/14) Let’s Get Cooking!
Attention chefs! Come explore, create, and discover new foods by creating your recipe. Where does our food come from? What is needed for plants to grow? Children will explore the world of culinary art by creating their snacks. At the end of the program, you will have your cookbook to take home filled with your child’s favorite recipes!
Week 4 (7/17-7/21) Horses & Llamas!
Calling all young equestrians! Come investigate and learn about llamas and horses. Where did they come from? How are they the same? How are they different? Our llamas will make an appearance and we’ll bake special horse treats for a surprise visitor! We’ll also get up close and personal with all the tack needed to ride a horse.
Week 5 (7/24-7/28) Reptiles and Dinosaurs!
Does your child love dinosaurs? Then this is the week for them! During this week’s program, we will explore and discover different reptiles and dinosaurs. Children will enjoy an interactive visit with the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center as they explore different types of reptiles and where they came from!
Week 6 (7/31- 8/4) Full Steam Ahead!
Kids and building: a match made in heaven! Can you build a lego boat that floats? or make a robot from recycled materials? This week children will explore interactive activities to learn science, technology, engineering, and math.
Week 7 (8/7- 8/11) 3-2-1 Blast off!
Ground control to MDS! This week your child will blast off to space. Where do black holes come from? How long does it take to go to the moon? Your child will discover the wonders of space, what it takes to be an astronaut, and design their own rocket ship!
Week 8 (8/14- 8/18) Mighty Explorers!
Come explore and discover the world around you during this week’s program. Your child will spend time in the great outdoors hiking through the wetlands, drawing in the llama field, and learning about the nature that surrounds them. During this week your camper will design a nature journal to bring home highlighting all the fun they had!
The MDS Summer Fun program follows the Montessori approach:
- Materials are displayed on child-sized shelves
- Children are free to move about and choose their activities
- Younger children learn from watching older children; older children help the younger ones
- Children are encouraged to develop independence while at the same time becoming part of a caring community
- Learning to work together and solve problems respectfully is an important part of our program
- Children can also use puzzles, blocks, and a whole range of everyday living activities such as sewing, pouring, and spooning. Although we usually eat lunch inside, sometimes we’ll have a picnic lunch in the shade. We have two playgrounds for outdoor fun and water play.
Our Summer Fun program also offers children who will be joining our Montessori classrooms in the fall a chance to get to know us. This usually leads to an easier adjustment to our educational program.
Have questions? We’d love to hear from you. Reach out to our Head of School, Kathryn Procko.
