This is a place where children share responsibility for their own education by selecting their learning activities from within a structured framework. They help to create a caring classroom community where all are valued and respected. The children also share in caring for their environment: feeding classroom animals, cleaning spills, and putting their work away. During their years here, children are guided by certified Montessori teachers and trained assistants, so they may truly develop to their greatest potential.
“We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.” Maria Montessori (Education for a New World)
As MDS children navigate the rest of their lives, their MDS education lays a strong foundation that serves them well and helps them develop as individuals. With the love of learning, curiosity, self reliance, self confidence and respect for others gained at MDS, children are ready to meet life head-on and enjoy doing so.
MDS is known for its strong commitment to Montessori education. All our head teachers hold certificates from well-respected Montessori training centers. We encourage staff members to deepen their knowledge by attending conferences and workshops as well as observing other Montessori programs. MDS curriculum is set by our trained Montessori staff, so your child will receive a full Montessori experience in our classrooms.
At MDS you will experience a community that seeks to involve your entire family. Your children are part of a full Montessori program and you can be part of a learning community. Our staff presents parent education programs so you can learn more about Montessori philosophy and curriculum. There are pot luck suppers and committees to engage your energies. MDS offers opportunities for growth for all members of our community: children, parents and staff.
Learning to communicate effectively is an important part of what happens at MDS. Children learn how to solve their differences using words. Staff members facilitate discussions between children to help them learn to express their feelings and find common ground. The staff uses the same approach to model effective communication skills for children and parents. MDS employs a facilitator who helps our school community members seek resolution of differences. Our ongoing goal is to encourage all members of our school community to be effective communicators and to develop and use conflict resolution skills.
Located in Norwich, MDS is situated on a former dairy farm. The children plant and care for various gardens and learn how to feed and care for our farm animals.
